You might be aware of Hashtags that are now used overall primary social media channels. But do you know what exactly that means?

What is Hashtag?

A hashtag starts with the # symbol and is followed by a word or words without spaces.

For example:
#SEO, #digitalmarketing, #googleseo, #seotips.

Hashtags are used to link various social media posts together and relate them to a topic. Topics can relate to an event, TV show, sporting event, or any happening or trend of your choosing.

Formerly, hashtags were only used on Twitter as a way of making it easier for people to find, follow, and contribute to a conversation, but today they can be used on Pinterest, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr.

By clicking on a hashtag in a social media post, that social network will automatically curate and display a feed of other messages also incorporating the same hashtag.

No special skills are required to create a hashtag. The only thing you need to do is put the pound sign directly in front of your targeted word or phrases that you want to turn into a hashtag. Never use 
Spaces, Punctuation, Special characters in hashtags.

 

Why use Hashtags?

There are various reasons why you should use hashtags in social media campaigns. The most important are:
 
  • Hashtags can help you to get found by your target audience. Users following the particular hashtag can see your messages even if they don’t follow you. In other words, by using popular hashtags in your posts you increase the potential audience.
 
  • Hashtags are great for research. If you are doing research, it’s easy to find great, relevant content by the search on specific hashtags. I’ve found that tweets with hashtags are generally more focused on a topic than a tweet that just mentions the phrase.
 
  • Hashtags improve your clickthrough rates. According to research, it was found that tweets with hashtags receive double engagement as compared to tweets with no hashtags. It means you can double your engagement and increase clickthrough rates by including hashtags. But using too many hashtags is also not good as it seems spammy, engagement drops when a tweet has two or more hashtags.
 
  • Hashtags can be used for humor. The hashtag is the social media equivalent of the aside or rimshot. While this may not help you get found in social media, it can certainly show your personality and help engage (or repel) your audience.
 

How to use Hashtags on Twitter?


The hashtag was firstly used in Twitter, the first ever tweet with a hashtag was posted in 2007 by a former Google employee. Since then hashtags became very popular in Twitter including other social media platforms.

Studies show that tweets with hashtags receive twice the engagement (tweets, retweets, clicks, and replies) than tweets without hashtags.

The suggested number of hashtags for a tweet for maximum exposure is 2. But that does not mean if you use 1 or 3 hashtags is bad, it’s simply a recommendation based on research studies.

Important things to know about using hashtags on Twitter.


1. View Trending hashtags

After login to your tweeter account, you will see on the left site the trending hashtags. The results are tailored to your location but you can click CHANGE and see what’s trending for other locations as well.

To view the tweets for a particular hashtag, just click on the hashtag link.
 

2. Follow a hashtag

To follow all tweets for a particular hashtag just enter the hashtag (with the # sign) in the search box and hit enter. The timeline will now show the TOP tweets containing your hashtag or ALL tweets.

You can click SAVE to save your search so that next time you click on the twitter search box, you can choose to view your saved search.
 
 

3. Create a tweet with a hashtag

When you create a new tweet and enter the # symbol and start typing, Twitter will make recommendations on the hashtag to use. You can either select one from the list or create your own.
 


How to use Hashtags on Facebook?

In 2013 Facebook started using hashtags and although it’s been a number of years since then, Facebook users don’t use hashtags a lot.

They do have a page in their help center explaining what are hashtags and how to use them but there is not much information there.


What you should know about using hashtags on Facebook are:

Rules are same like applied in twitter i.e.
 
  • No spaces
 
  • If a hashtag does not exist will be created
 
  • If you want to follow a hashtag just search for it using # in the search bar.
 
Recommended number of hashtags for a Facebook post is 1 or 2. After 5 hashtags the interactions a post might receive start to decline.

When you create a post with a hashtag and share it with everyone (public), your post will appear when people search for the particular hashtag (provided that you allow people to follow you).

 

How to use Hashtags on Instagram?

Instagram is made for sharing photos and videos. Similar to Facebook or Twitter, everyone who creates an Instagram account has a profile and a news feed.

If you like using hashtags then create an account on Instagram and start tagging!

Recommended number of hashtags for an Instagram post is 11

You can use numbers but no spaces or other special characters when tagging (like $ or %) and you can click on a hashtag to see other posts that share the same tag.
 
 

How to use Hashtags on Google+

Google Plus uses hashtags in a more sensible way. Google+ not only allows users to mention their own hashtag but also add hashtags to posts that may not have any hashtags.

If you visit your Google+ stream you will notice that even though posts don’t have hashtags in the post body, the system added hashtags based on the content. By clicking on a hashtag you can see related posts to that hashtag.

Recommended number of hashtags for a Google+ post is 3.

It is better to choose your hashtags while publishing your posts instead of letting the system do this automatically.

Hashtags are easy to use and have many advantages to offer. In-proper use of hashtags can sometimes be considered as a form of spam that’s why it’s important to follow the simple rules outlined above when using hashtags in your social media postings.
